The club is centred on the town of Thurles. The club was founded in 1881 and is the most successful club in the history of the county championship. Club colours are blue and white. The home pitch is the Outside Field beside Semple Stadium.

On 25 November 2012, Thurles won their first ever Munster GAA Senior Club Hurling Championship after a 1-21 to 1-16 victory over De La Salle in the final at Pairc Ui Chaoimh.

Countless Sarsfields players have gone on to represent various Tipperary teams down through the years. Jimmy Doyle, one of hurlings all time greats was from Thurles. Some of the most well known hurlers of recent years includes -
Eddie Enright, Ger 'Redser' O'Grady, Lar Corbett, Michael Cahill, Padraic Maher, Ronan Maher, Pa Bourke
